1 Muharram, 1435

The first day of Muharram is 'Ammul Jadid 

New Year - according to Islamic calendar.

It is considered today as Hijrah Day, generally celebrated as such by Muslims all over the world, although the actual Hijrah occurred on Friday, Rabi-'ul Awwal 12, 1 A. H., or on September 24, 622 A. C. Caliph Umar, the second Caliph of Islam, in agreement with his learned companions and at the suggestion of Ali, made that year as the first year of the Islamic Calendar, commonly known as the Hijrah Calendar, prior to which there was no fixed calendar in Arabia.

The Muslim consider the Hijrah as the most significant event in the history of Islam because from that time on, the seed of Islam grew steadily in the City of Madinah until, in the very short period of ten years, the Islam religion has spread over the whole of Arabia. Its state is based on the teachings of the Holy Qura'an and the traditions of the Prophet. This well established at Madinah, which was then regarded as the capital of the Islamic Government.

It is said without the Hijrah the Islam religion would not have existed today as the most perfect religion, based on reason and sound logic, which is simple and straight forward and has no hierarchy of priests, no farfetched abstractions and no complicated rites and rituals.

Hijrah Day is celebrated with exchange of greetings and narrations of stories about the Prophet and his companions.
